In Reykjavik, I picked up the local English language newspaper. Idly flicking through I found this interview. It touched on a problem I never knew existed – Iceland has a problem with invading polar bears. They somehow make it over when the Arctic Ocean is frozen to the north of the country, and nobody quite knows what to do with them. It’s always worth reading the local paper: You never quite know what you’ll discover.

I reckon I’ve picked up 6.4% of my story ideas from local newspapers. Always worth a look – even if you can’t completely understand the language. Pictures are often a great help.
I’m the same, Steve. Source of plenty of good stories. Theoretically we should read them online before we go, but it’s always the stories you’re not looking for that jump out in a paper. That’s the key advantage of print over online, I guess.
Yeah, that’s definitely good pre-trip planning.
Also – when I’m waiting for my coffee to be made, I always have a rustle around the cafe – look at notice boards, through newspaper/magazine racks; amazing what you find sometimes.
