I’m an absolute sucker for travel and geography trivia, so I thought I’d share my favourite stats and facts here. These are all things that I’ve picked up somewhere down the line, and I’ll add to the list from time to time.


 

  1. There are no non-venomous snakes in Tasmania.
  2. In Gibraltar, the main road traverses the airport runway.
  3. The age of sexual consent in the Vatican City is just 12 years old.
  4. Monaco was founded by a pirate.
  5. Liechtenstein is the only country named after the family that bought it.
  6. The canary is named after the Canary Islands, not the other way round.
  7. On the Caribbean island of St Martin/ Sint Maarten, there is a hotel which has its on-site restaurant in a separate country.
  8. The first ever euros were spent on Réunion, a French island off the coast of Africa.
  9. San Marino is the oldest country in the world.
  10. On the island of Tanna in Vanuatu, there are people that worship Prince Philip as a god.
  11. The Liechtenstein national anthem is sung to the tune of God Save The Queen.
  12. In September 2009, Samoa will become the first country to change the side of the road it drives on since Burma in 1970.
  13. The biggest ever crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground wasn’t for a sporting event – it was for a Billy Graham rally.

    For the first 6 months, it only applies to buses and heavy lorries! :D
